Publications

The following is a listing of articles I have published in ceramics magazines and journals in the past two years. I believe contributing in this way to our field is just as important as making. Please click on the link to go directly to the article. Thank you to Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated and Studio Potter for giving me the opportunity to share these things.

Chutes and Ladders

In this article, from the February 2019 issue of Ceramics Monthly, I discuss my career in ceramics and the path I have taken. I think we all need to take a step back sometimes, realize how far we have come, celebrate our accomplishments, and focus on making our best work.

Adventures in Rebuilding a High School Clay Program

In 2014 I took over a high school clay program in Gainesville, Florida. The position was a temporary part time position that was supposed to end after a year, and 5 years later we have a thriving program and I am the department chair of visual and performing arts. This article, published in the fall issue of Studio Potter 2018, describes how I went from my own educational journey to running my own program. The expression from the film Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come” is absolutely true.

Teabowls: Form and Surface

Pottery Making Illustrated asked me to write an article about my surface techniques in the fall of 2017. This article was printed in the April 2018 issue. I explain how my surface relates to my form, how I make the marks I make, and finish the piece when glazing. All my recipes are included, or can be found on my process page as well.
